Congratulations, you’ve found the perfect car for you and you’re ready to buy. But you want to make sure you get the best deal. So, you’ve done your homework and now you just need to know the best time to buy the car you’ve been drooling over.

The good news is, you don’t have to wait very long. There’s a ton of misconceptions around when the best time to buy a car really is, but the truth of the matter is that it’s more simple than you think.
The best time to buy a car is when you are have done your research and are financially prepared.
That’s it. Profound I know.
Just kidding, there are some good times to buy a car, but I stand by what I said.
The Best Day to Buy a Car is Early in the Week
When it comes to getting stellar service, your best bet is early in the week. This is no fault of the salesmen, it just works out that dealerships are totally packed on the weekends.
And it makes perfect sense too. I’ve always wondered why everyone rushes to the dealership on the weekends expecting it to just be them.
As people, we have a tendency to do this sort of thing. We go to the mall on Saturdays, grocery shopping on Sundays and all jam onto the road at 8 am for work.
But buying a car doesn’t have to be like that. Cars are likely to be the second most expensive purchase of your life. Make it easier on yourself. If you can go early in the week you will have a much better experience.

Any good salesman would be happy to help you out early in the week, even if you’re not prepared to buy that day.
Also, it’s important that you take the time to shop for the right car for you, and the best time to do that is early in the week when the dealership isn’t that busy. This way, you can test drive multiple cars without a problem.
The sales environment is a little more relaxed too because they are coming out of a hectic weekend. You might find yourself actually enjoying the dealership if you play your cars right.
The Best Time of the Month to Buy a Car is the End
This is obvious. Of course, it’s the end of the month. We all know why too. Salesmen trying to make their quota.
But there is a caveat here and it’s not always guaranteed to land you the best deal in the history of deals.
Dealerships are only willing to offer amazing deals on cars when they are close to making some quota that makes it worthwhile.
If they have already hit that goal then it might not really motivate them to give you some gigantic discount. Unfortunately, you won’t know ahead of time.
Since everyone will have the same idea as you and rush to the dealership just to get that sweet end-of-month dealership discount do yourself a favor and test drive earlier in the month.
Preferably on a Monday.

Go in at the end of the month and close the deal quickly and with little drama.
The Best Time to Buy a New Car is at the End of the Year
Year-end savings and deals are well known. This is a perfect time to waltz in and lock down that lease or buy that brand new Smart Car you’ve been dreaming about.
Automotive data house Edmunds says the biggest discounts on new cars is in December, at 6.1% off MSRP.
December is also the best month for incentives on new cars.
This is your chance to snag an outgoing model year for cheap. The best time to do this is roughly two years after a model was released.
What I mean is, you should wait two years after the most recent “redesign” of the vehicle so that when you buy the outgoing model year, it will be just like the newest models for the next couple of years.

The Best Months to Get a Good Discount on a New Car:
- January – Not many discounts
- February – Still not many discounts
- March – No, who buys a car in March?
- April – April showers bring no discounts.
- May – Suns out savings!
- June – Summer savings!
- July – Summer savings again!
- August – End of Summer savings!
- September – Still not bad
- October – Good Discounts
- November – It’s raining discounts
- December – Hella discounts everywhere
As you look at this you might think there is no reason to buy in any month other than October through December.
But the trade-off for the big savings is a potential lack of inventory.
See, the inventory is what drives the savings to begin with, so if you wait too long you might not get the car you really want.
The good news is, you can still get a good deal May through September and have much more inventory to shop from.
Remember, in the summer months, new model year inventory is hitting the lots which present a good time to take your pick of the litter from the model years being discontinued.
The summer months present an excellent time to compare models side-by-side and will allow you to make a decision on things you “must have” and things you can “do without”.
Take advantage of this time of the year even if you haven’t made up your mind to buy just yet. Summer lease offers are also usually good on the outgoing models and it could be a good time to get yourself in a new car with a lower payment.
The Best Holidays to Buy a Car are Three Day Weekends
The problem with shopping for a car on three-day weekends is that dealerships are totally packed with amateur car buyers.
Don’t be one of them. If you’re going to shop a three-day weekend you can snag a discount but go in prepared.
Here are all the three-day weekends that usually spark dealerships to advertise big savings:
- Presidents Day – This falls in February, a month with few discounts typically, so it might not be the best deal.
- Memorial Day – This holiday usually marks the beginning of summer savings and can present a good opportunity to snag a nice deal on a car. Typically, dealerships have a lot of inventory to choose from as well.
- Fourth of July– Usually, dealerships will have a good mix of “new model year” and “outgoing model year” vehicles on the lot, so it’s a good chance to go check them and out and see if it’s worth waiting for a deal on a new one.
- Labor Day – This is sort of the “Goldilocks zone” of car buying. Plenty of inventory to choose from and good savings without having to risk waiting till the end of the year.
- Black Friday – It will be nuts at the dealership on this day. Probably not even worth going to be honest. 2/10 would not recommend.
- Cyber Monday– Don’t forget to check for special internet pricing on Cyber Monday, which is becoming a more popular promotion period for car dealers.
Three-day weekends are always super busy and I feel like you can get just as good of a deal at another time during the same month as the three-day weekend. In fact, many dealerships extend their sale to a few days after, or before, a three-day weekend.
The problem is that the dealerships are always slammed with people who are inexperienced at buying cars and the dealerships are in a “turn-and-burn” sales mode that might not create the best environment for you to get the service you deserve.
My recommendation is to sit on the sidelines, but if you go in prepared and with an appointment it might just work in your favor.
Best Time to Buy a Car is When a Model Year Ends
Fall isn’t just the time of year when leaves change, it’s when model years change too.
New model years are hitting showrooms as early as March these days which means summer and end of summer deals on outgoing model years heat up.
The best time to get a good deal on a car is when the new model year comes out. Remember, cars usually have a five to ten-year life, with only design changes between.
Many outgoing model years look and drive identically to the incoming model years, so you won’t be missing much and your pocketbook will be a little fatter to stay warm in the winter.
This is a good strategy for someone who doesn’t put much emphasis on the age of a car but still wants to buy a brand new car. You can even get attractive financing terms on an outgoing model year because it’s less than a year old and still brand new.
This time frame presents a win-win for both the dealership and the right buyer. That common ground can be a great place to sit as a consumer.
The Best to Time Buy a Car is at the End of Its Design Cycle
When a car’s design cycle or life cycle ends it presents an awesome opportunity to pick up a brand new car on the low-low.
The reason is dealerships need to move out expiring inventory to make room for all the new redesigned models.
It’s sort of like the “Managers Special” bin at the grocery store as far as cars are concerned.
If you are a person that doesn’t like the new design or if you just don’t care that much about the changes in looks and technology this is your time to buy.
The Best Time to Buy a Car is When You’re Ready
It sounds corny I know, but it’s true. We’ve outlined several times that are optimal for making your purchase. But the reality is that only you will know when the best time to buy is.
As you can see there are several times when you can get a good deal on a car. But sometimes it’s best to just do your shopping, save up some money and pull the trigger when it feels right.
Only you know when that perfect moment is. It’s that moment when you wake up and every ounce of your soul says, “Dude, we’re getting a new car today”. And it’s just such a bitchin’ feeling. It’s like the whole world knows too and birds chirp and the sun shines and everything is well in the universe for just one glorious second.
The best time to buy a car is when everything in your life lines up for you and makes the decision both easy and most of all enjoyable.
