2018 Audi S4 | Model Review | Model Specs
Few cars are capable of doing what the 2018 Audi S4 does. It defines what the sports sedan segment should look like by blending style, performance, and comfort into one well-balanced package.
Referred to as the “B9”, the new generation A4/S4 received a total refresh in 2017 that has resulted in one of the best looking, and driving, sports sedans in Audi’s lineup.
To check out the previous generation Audi S4 see our 2013 Audi S4 Model Review.
Some say the 2018 Audi S4 is understated and while that may be true everyone agrees that once you’re in the drivers seat the car makes a very obvious and bold statement.
And despite the ongoing debates surrounding the Audi S4 as a top-end contender along the lines of “AMG” and “M” one thing is absolutely clear- this car is not a game.
One look at it’s “competitors” specs will have you wondering what anyone is even debating about. If this car had a wallet, it would say “Bad Mother F—er” on it.
As far as car reviews go you can view my opinion on the current state of reviews in my post: The Problem With Car Reviews. This is simply my opinion based on driving the car and it is completely unfiltered. Proceed accordingly.

What’s New in the 2018 Audi S4
For starters, Audi ditches its blessed 3.0-Liter supercharged V6 from the previous generation in favor of a new turbocharged V6 co-designed with none other than Porsche.
I must admit, this was a solid move. While I love the low-end torque of supercharged motors, this turbocharged V6 is the best thing from the Germans since German Chocolate Cake. Just kidding. But for real it’s good.
Moving through the drivetrain the car retains its iconic all-wheel-drive system, Quattro, and before you ask, yes, it is still the best in the industry.
Audi made the decision to drop its very fun dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission and replaced it with an eight-speed ZF torque-converter automatic. To be honest I’m not sure why. Don’t get me wrong the eight-speed is good, but the “DSG” in the previous generation was almost Porsche PDK good. Also, no manual option is available.
The lack of a manual option is a real bummer. What’s next, an autonomous driving sports sedan?
Further updates include a refreshed exterior and interior including a multitude of technology and luxury that substantially blows the doors off of the previous generation Audi S4 and its “competitors”.
2018 Audi S4 Interior and Cabin
2018 Audi S4 Interior Highlights:
- Incredible sport bucket seats
- High-quality materials throughout
- Great field of view
- Digital dashboard from NASA
- Luxurious fit and finish
- Flat-bottom steering wheel
- Bang and Olufsen sound system
- Simple-to-use climate control
When you open the door to the 2018 Audi S4 it feels lightweight in your hands. It just sort of opens for you. The keyless entry works perfectly every time and there’s no drama. It greets you with open arms too. The door alone is constructed so beautifully that it’s almost hard to look away.
A blend of carbon fiber, Alcantara, stitched leather, and aluminum all come together perfectly and are a stunning example of what Audi is capable of. When you close it you get that satisfying thud that screams quality.
Diamond stitched real Napa Leather, embossed with the coveted “S” logo adorn the sport bucket seats. Slide in and feel them welcome you into their grip. Feel their warmth. Indulge in it.
Take a breath because soon you will realize that the seat you are in is massaging and remember to pinch yourself. This isn’t a dream, it’s just the closest thing to heaven you’ve experienced. Don’t worry, the massaging seats are standard.
Grip that amazing flat-bottom steering wheel and let your eyes fixate on the beautiful digital dashboard that Audi has created. This thing is straight from a NASA cockpit and looks and feels incredible. When you’re rushing through the gears it animates in unbelievable style.
The 8.3-inch center screen sits above a simple and elegant climate control center that all other manufacturers should take notes from. Seriously, why does climate control in a car require a degree? It should all be this easy.
A Bang and Olufsen sound system fills the car with sick beats and is one of the most amazing sound systems in any car out there. Seriously, it’s so good.
Driving the 2018 Audi S4:
Here’s why I love it:
- No turbocharger lag
- Strong acceleration
- Satisfying exhaust notes
- Comfortable but sporty
- Insane grip
- Quattro means you don’t care about the weather
- Sport Differential
Usually, cars equipped with turbochargers suffer from what’s known as “turbo lag”, which refers to the period of time where the turbochargers are “spooling up” and therefore inactive. Porsche has somehow found the secret sauce to turbochargers and we should be considering them for some sort of Nobel prize.
The 2018 Audi S4 suffers from literally no turbo lag. And I mean that too, this isn’t just like one of those things you hear people say on youtube. This mighty V6 offers truly powerful acceleration and when you bump that shift knob back to proudly display the “S” on the dashboard you know it’s time to party.
Despite the lack of a dual-clutch automatic, the eight-speed reacts well and you hardly notice it doing its thing in the background. However, the engine sounds great and the exhaust note is just right without being annoying.
Engage launch control and this sports sedan will shove you into the seat and command respect while it knocks down 0-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. It’s ridiculous.
With all the confidence and bravado of Mike Tyson, you rush the 2018 Audi S4 headfirst into the corners and you notice that car doesn’t even care. It yawns as the Quattro all-wheel-drive keeps it planted.
Exit the turn and feel the newly refined “sports differential” rotate the car emulating a rear-wheel-drive sports car with ease. Your hearts pounding now and it’s great.
The new chassis responds crisply and is miles ahead of the previous generation. It feels light in the front-end and Audi has worked to reduce the understeer the older models exhibit.
When you’re in the driver’s seat it feels like a million bucks. The diamond-stitched leather, the carbon fiber, the massaging seats, they all come together to form a first-class driving experience.
Pepper in that sweet turbocharged V6 and Quattro all-wheel-drive and the 2018 Audi S4 becomes an immensely satisfying, and luxurious, sports sedan for the price.
2018 Audi S4 Final Thoughts
The 2018 Audi S4 has stepped its game up over the previous generation and offers an amazing driving experience that offers ample performance and comfort.
Sleek styling, top-notch technology, and very nice standard options make this sports sedan an uncompromising option. If you’re looking for the solution to your boring daily driver this is it.
Where BMW, Mercedes, and Cadillac are just now beginning to offer sports sedans that slide in between their top-end and base models, Audi has been doing this for four-generations.
And let’s talk about the price.
While $52,000 may sound steep, you get a lot of car for that. Keep in mind all-wheel-drive cars are typically more than their two-wheel drive counterparts as discussed in my post: The Guide to All Wheel Drive Cars.
However, compare the 2018 Audi S4’s price to the lesser performing BMW 340i X-Drive at $60,000 and you will quickly see the value here.
Even the similarly performing Mercedes-Benz AMG C43 sedan has a base price of $55,000 and that’s a bare-bones manual-windows C43. Add a couple of options and watch it outprice the BMW with ease.
As I have said before, the 2018 Audi S4 blends several elements across multiple sectors seamlessly and it is a clear reminder why the sedan segment should not be allowed to die because of oversized and underperforming SUV’s.
It is a clear winner in performance and does everything exceptionally well.
The 2018 Audi S4 is large enough to comfortably fit a wide variety of passengers, there’s tons of storage, it drives like a maniac and it’s comfortable enough to dress down and go to a fancy dinner in.
You can easily commute to and from work, hit the race track, and it makes every corner in any weather a blast to barrel through. All of that for a base price of $52,000. It’s a bargain compared to the other “competitors” in the space.
Here’s why I think you should buy it:
- Amazing for daily driving
- Perfect for families or singles
- Fast but not reckless
- Sleek design inside and out
- Ultra high-quality
- Accelerates, shifts, and handles like a sports car
- Ultra luxurious but still sporty
- Best bargain for the price
I want to take a minute to thank the very cool Blake for allowing me the opportunity to view and photograph his amazing 2018 Audi S4.
He has the car beautifully optioned and was kind enough to sling me around in the passenger seat and stand in the baking-ass Texas heat patiently while I talked his ear off.
I hope this 2018 Audi S4 review proves to be useful as you search for your next car. Remember, the beauty of the S4 is that it doesn’t require you to make any sacrifices to enjoy your driving experience and that’s something all cars should be striving towards.
