2018 Audi Q5 | Model Review | Model Specs
With a fresh new look and nice standard options, the 2018 Audi Q5 sets a standard in the crossover class that’s hard to beat. An underrated 252-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder is married to a smooth shifting 7-speed automatic and legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive making this a driving experience that’s both comfortable and satisfying.
Audi’s crossover queen gets a total overhaul this year and the new design is bold and easy to identify. The 2018 Audi Q5 gets an exterior and interior refresh and now comes standard with Audi Pre Sense Basic and Audi Pre Sense City. Other standard options include a 7.0-inch center display, Quattro all-wheel-drive, Apple CarPlay, and Google Android Auto.
The 2018 Audi Q5 stands on its own in a sea of crossovers but only has one true competitor, the Porsche Macan. Built on the same chassis, powered by the same engine, both all-wheel-drive, and both priced wildly different with a base Macan coming in at $7,000 more before options.

2018 Audi Q5 Interior and Cabin
2018 Audi Q5 Interior Highlights:
- Beautiful layout
- Spacious and light
- Quiet cabin
- Digital Dashboard
Like all Audi’s when you open the door to the 2018 Audi Q5 you immediately feel the luxury. The seats are soft and feel nice, the wood is real and not cheesy looking, the dashboard is large and vibrant, and the interior is full of light.
Shut the door and get that familiar thud, get comfortable in the cozy driver’s seat and look around. Bask in the beautiful layout, with everything at your fingertips and super intuitive climate controls. The climate console has these little switches on it that seem to sense your fingers before they touch the button and the screen will light up to show you the options you have. Everything is just sort of right at your fingertips.
It’s spacious and airy with a gigantic sunroof that spans almost the entirety of the car. The 2018 Audi Q5 lets in tons of natural light and it makes it feel warm inside, especially on the rainy cold days that I had the car. All of the gauges are digital even for the rear-seat climate controls and it really adds to this sort of feeling that the whole car is technologically savvy and clean inside.
Inside the car, it’s basically the most luxury you will find in its price range. It’s quiet and comfortable and the loaner I got had heated and ventilated seats. Three-zone climate control makes it nice for everyone, but the car is seriously quiet inside. Even in pouring rain while on the highway I could still carry on a normal conversation with my wife.
And I’ve said it before but I will say it one more time just in case you missed the 77 other times I have said this, Audi is running the game on digital dashboards. It is so beautiful and fun to play around with. It looks badass and puts the whole car at your fingertips. It’s a sight to behold for sure.
Driving the 2018 Audi Q5
Here’s why I love it:
- Sharp and heavy handling
- Quiet cabin
- Comfortable ride quality
- Decent power and torque
- Easy to live with
Everyone knows I hate the SUV and I’ve gone on several rants on why I don’t think anyone really needs an SUV. I have also gone on similar rants about crossovers regarding them as bastardized station wagons. But I have to concede, they are here to stay and people really love them for whatever reason.
That being said I was actually excited when Audi Grapevine loaned me one of these for a couple of rainy days. I was curious to see why people love the Audi Q5 so much and I have to admit, I was a little bummed out when I returned the car to the dealership. And that says a lot about how great the car was while I had it. Even me, an ardent opponent of the Crossover, enjoyed the Audi Q5.
Despite the rain, the car handled sharp with heavy handling. It was direct and felt much heavier than the normal electric steering Audi has had in the past. Either it’s gotten better or the Audi Q5 is an exception to the rule, either way, it was good. Even in inches of standing water and in some cases small flooding on the road the 8.2 inches of ground clearance made the car handle great.
Over bumps and heavy rain puddles, the Audi Q5 soaks up the road like an old luffa. But If you really want to get brave you can flip the car through its various drive modes to the “offroad” setting which I totally didn’t use in case the dealership is reading this.
Seriously, I was taken back by the ride quality. Even commuting into the heavily potholed downtown Dallas it was easy and drama free and I actually felt pretty relaxed as opposed to how I normally feel on that route. All the way to the office I enjoyed the amenities of a quality ride with a quiet cabin.
Even more surprising was the amount of power and torque available which was pretty surprising given the tiny motor in this thing. Premium Plus and Prestige trims boast 4,400-lb of max towing capacity and a 440-lb tongue weight. If you want to haul some toys around the 2018 Audi Q5 can likely do it with ease, but I’m not sure how great it feels.
Finally, the Audi Q5 is simply easy to live with. With a total length of 182.6 inches and 60.4 cubic feet of storage (with the seats folded down), the Audi Q5 has plenty of storage and fits in most places. The mighty crossover is easy to navigate downtown, through underground parking structures and fits comfortably in your own garage at home.
The Best Options for the 2018 Audi Q5
I’m going to have to tell you to throw down on this and ball out. The Prestige trim comes extremely well equipped for its base price of $50,800. Add in the cold/hot weather package along with the Driver Assistance Package and the 2018 Audi Q5 caps out at $56,000. That might seem like a lot, but it’s extremely luxurious, well optioned, and drives like an absolute dream. All for less than some Ford F-150’s.
One thing is for sure the basic sound system in the Audi Q5 is absolute shit. It’s like listening to someone play a radio in the next room through a tin can pressed against the wall. That being said the Bang and Olufsen sound system is a must-have upgrade. But all in on the Prestige gets you that and a lot more.
The 2018 Audi Q5 is the sensible crossover for those who don’t necessarily have a value for insane performance. It’s comfortable, looks great, feels luxurious and drives wherever (and whatever) you need it to. It seats 5 with ease, has up to 60 cubic feet of storage, can go offroad and into downtown and it’s got more technology than they went to the moon with. All-in-all it’s a damn good car and even has me thinking twice about crossovers.
But, if you’re looking for pep-in-your-step than you need to consider the amazing Audi SQ5, Porsche Macan, or Jaguar F-Pace S. That’s not to say this car is boring by any means, but it’s simply not made to be a pavement killer. You can read more about these cars in my post on the best crossover SUV money can buy.
